“O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? Saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in my hand…” Jeremiah 18:6
One of our neighbors recently shared with my wife and me a principle that her hundred-year-old mother often claims is one of the ‘secrets’ behind her successful life and longevity: “Motion is lotion.” Her centenarian mother believes it is important to keep moving, and to stay current and active mentally and physically. That suggests we must not allow ourselves to ‘rot’ out or stagnate in any position in life, and I believe that is accurate and relevant not only to our physical and mental lives, but to every area of our lives and endeavors. This principle is also borne out powerfully in many parts of the Word of God. There is a better way of doing whatever you are currently doing in your life. Somebody somewhere knows the answer to your most daunting questions. Something may be a mystery to you, but someone has already cracked the code to that mystery. The real question is: Are you teachable, pliable, and flexible? Oral Roberts, one of the greatest evangelists of this generation, once said, “I am not married to methods.” That means he is open to new ideas, and new ways of achieving his goals. Are you married to your methods? If you want to grow in wisdom, you must be open to counsel and instructions from others. Your way doesn’t always lead to the highway. Somebody can help you achieve with greater ease whatever you are trying to achieve in your life today. The Bible says, “Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep waters but a man of understanding can help draw it out.” Although Moses was doing his best under the circumstances, Jethro, his father-in-law observed him and said, “The thing you are doing is not good.” Sometimes we are doing our best in life, but the fruits we are producing, or lack thereof is the proof that there must be a better way to get it done. The Bible says, “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he who listens to counsel is wise.” Pray for yourself and cultivate an open heart of humility that willingly embraces sound counsel based on the truth of the Word of God. Jethro’s counsel saved Moses’ Life. Rehoboam, on the other hand, lost the kingdom and squandered the gains of those who came before him, because of his foolishness. Submit yourself to some people of wisdom today. You are going up in Jesus’ mighty name!
Prayer: Father, thank you for speaking your word to my heart today. I pray and commit to developing an open heart of humility that willingly embraces sound counsel based on the truth of your Word. I am not stubborn, obstinate, or foolish. I am full of the Spirit of wisdom and humility. Thank you, Father. In Jesus’ mighty Name. Amen!
